On Tuesday, August 17, the second Official WordPress.com Growth Summit will feature Jessica Petrie of Next Door Yoga, Gameday at an HBCU, and other inspirational customers.

As the globe adjusted to pandemic life last summer, Jessica Petrie realized she needed to alter the way she operated her yoga business, Yoga Next Door. 

She soon found out how to broadcast her courses from her Maine studio, and she changed her business model to include video learning and online payment. While she anticipated a return to in-person courses and retreats, she refused to be slowed down by the epidemic and devised a method for her students to continue their yoga practice from the comfort of their own homes. 

Customers like Jessica — or HBCU Gameday’s Steven Gaither, Wali Pitt, and Tolly Carr — teach us a lot. While focusing on their essential coverage of athletics and culture at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the trio doubled down on knowing their expanding audience. Along the process, their skilled use of SEO tools has helped them boost site traffic. 

Many WordPress.com authors have expanded their audiences by writing on social and cultural movements across the globe, demonstrating their flexibility, tenacity, and influence in difficult times.

Muslim Woman

Amani al-Khatahtbeh founded Muslim Girl, a website and a movement. Amani has built a platform centered on raising awareness, elevating youthful voices, and encouraging open conversation, whether it’s spotlighting notable Muslim women in the Olympics or the media, or delving into topics like human trafficking and marriage in contemporary Islam culture. Amani is also creating a community around the various identities of Muslim women in the West, both on #MuslimWomensDay (which will be celebrated for the sixth time in March) and every day.

CalMatters

CalMatters’ CEO Neil Chase and VP of Product Strategy Kim Fox will speak with our own Kinsey Wilson, the head of Newspack, about their nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom (the open-source publishing and revenue-generating platform for news organizations.) CalMatters is a non-profit organization that not only covers California policy and politics, but also assists new publications with their digital platforms. We’ll discover how they got started, how they stay in business, and what they think the future holds for digital journalism.

Languages of Zaloa 

Anja Spilker is the creator of Zaloa Languages, a business headquartered in Mexico that provides online language instruction with local instructors to a global audience. Anja is a one-of-a-kind mix of entrepreneur, CEO, and influencer. She’s just as good at revealing her behind-the-scenes life as she is at changing her company model, substantially boosting revenue, and building a compelling brand with a smart ecommerce strategy. It will be a lesson in itself to listen to her explain the tale of Zaloa Languages.

HBCU Gameday 

Steven J. Gaither identified an underserved niche in the broad sports media market with HBCU Gameday. He collaborated with Tolly Carr, an experienced writer, and Wali Pitt, a digital technologist and video producer, to develop a magazine that focuses on HBCU sports tales of culture and substance. They’re hands-on when it comes to figuring out how their audience discovers them, and they’re quick to adapt to new forms (video!) as well.

Workprint

David Nitzsche is a virtuoso of short-form storytelling who has turned it into a business. We’ll see how he creates trailers, music videos, and creative for companies like Apple, Marvel, National Geographic, Red Bull, Netflix, Google, and others. David will also discuss how he transitioned from freelance editing to opening his own post-production company, Workprint, in the midst of the epidemic in Los Angeles.

Yoga Next Door 

If Jessica’s tale about borrowing her son’s GoPro camera to try out giving her lessons through online video doesn’t excite you, Yoga Next Door’s return to real-life retreats will. But it’s Jessica’s on-the-fly business acumen, such as how she built up a digital library for consumers while continuing to freely offer her mindfulness and yoga knowledge, that you’ll take away the most. (She’ll even give a mid-Summit yoga and mindfulness class to participants.)

STATURE

Which of Nick Engvall’s businesses do you think you can learn the most from? We discovered him via Sneaker History, a podcast he started with and for other sneakerheads, based on his own content-creation experience with companies like StockX and Finish Line. We’ll also talk about his creative agency STATURE, his hands-on thought leadership for podcasters and artists, his WordPress advocacy, and how he manages it all!

That is, if we have time. Because all of these speakers have a wealth of experiences and ideas to offer, and because we have a jam-packed Summit program that includes workshops led by our own brilliant Happiness Engineers on blogging, podcasting, audience development, and SEO.
